How it all began…
So as mentioned last month, I’ve been thinking about redoing our Freelancer R blog to something different and that decision is now a go.
For all you followers out there, I am planning on moving this site, as well as SPANTENNA to a new server, with a new name, and…AND a brand new design! Huh? Doesn’t that sound awesome!?
Hey Internet! So…I have been thinking.
Yes, yes, smoke, sweat, and all that stuff, but in all honesty, I have been thinking. And the thinking is about our little blog here.
Over at Lifehacker – the best site for interesting things – they have a series of articles that talk about how people work. Not what they do, but how they do it. For some reason, it got me wondering how many of you freelancing readers out there are working your freelancing. Every person is different when it comes to their working style and freelancing is no different, however with freelancing, you can basically work whenever and wherever you want.
Okay, there is that difference.
But if you’re new to freelancing, how should you be working?
Okay, you all know what I’m going to say.
Sorry, job, real life, yadda yadda. But I’m here, yeah? I will totally never leave you guys fully (unless one day I totally leave you guys fully).
So I started at this new job of mine as an independent contractor. That’s the fancy name you get when you’re starting out as a freelancer for a company. It makes sense – they try you out, you try them out, and if it all works together, then boom. You may not be an IC anymore (you could go full time!) Read the rest of this entry
Lo readers! Welcome back, post Thanksgiving holiday and welcome to December! I now give you permission to start listening to Christmas music and watching those Christmas specials you love and enjoy! And with our entry into December, it’s time for punch, pie, and presents! Oh yeah! So last week I mentioned that I got a pretty good deal on a little cheapy laptop during Black Friday; seeing as many of you will either be gifting or getting your freelancer some sort of computer or tablet (fingers crossed!), chances are you’re going to get some sort of equipment that has Windows 8 or 8.1 on it. Seeing as I’m also with a Windows 8.1 laptop, here’s a little bit about that! Read the rest of this entry
I know, it’s been a hella long time since I posted and that’s kinda sad.
If you remember, I’ve been on the quest to become a technical writer, which started all the way back in June. Since then, I’ve been trying to jump into the career, while maintaining a full time job schedule; which, btw, I hate job searching in case you’re wondering. I hate it with every fiber of my being, if that’s even possible. (In this case, yes it is).
So I’ve gone the usual job search route, until I heard about the STC. What, you may ask, is the STC? It stands for the Society of Technical Communication, a group for…well, technical communicators. In my case, technical writers. A networking group if you will dedicated to bringing those of us together, in the realm of technical communication. The normal year membership is like $150, which…what? $150! Good lord, that’s a lot of money! Hence why I wasn’t jumping at the chance to join, but I did sign up to get more info and luckily, a sales price went up, so I decided to give it a try. Read the rest of this entry
So the past few weeks, I’ve lamented about turning 35 and looking for a career, talking about internships, and getting a portfolio, etc. I probably mentioned what path I’m pursuing, but I don’t think I’ve explained exactly what it is I’m doing. So if you’re wondering why my awesome blog isn’t being updated every week (you know, when I’m actually updating every week), here’s the answer. Read the rest of this entry
